Using the walk and talk position

By turning the valve a quarter counter-clockwise it is turned from the ‘talk’ (right figure) to the ‘walk’ (Off=right figure) position (see video clip). When turning, inside the valve a magnetic pin is rotated towards the magnet at the end of the membrane. Thereby, the membrane is trapped and it will not close on exhalation. Explain this feature to the patient and show the patient how he or she can see in what position the valve is. It also should be mentioned, that physical exertion with the valve in talk position can lead to a slightly increased airflow resistance, even if the valve does not close completely. It is advised to insert the valve in the housing for speaking adjusted in the talk position. Practice a couple of times how to adjust the valve when placed in the housing.
